Children losing their faith

Here is an interesting article on children losing their faith. This can happen as early as age 10. The reason is that atheism seems for conform to the scientistic view they get from the culture around them. They are looking for a scientific proof for God and for the claims of Christianity. This problem is not limited to children. We deal so often in our day to day lives with technologies the work in a predictable cause and effect manner. We have reduced our lives to what these devices can do for us. Our world view gets narrowed down to this context. We should not be surprised that we have technological world view in which we demand a proof for God that is proportioned to our technological (everything can be explained) world view. When I teach 8th grade School of Religion, I try to bring out a “proof” for the existence of God. This proof is actually a proof for the contingency of the existence of the universe. Since we can see the existence of the universe as being contingent, that is, it may not ever have existed, we can see that this view can only come about because the God who freely created the universe out of nothing has revealed Himself to us. Otherwise, we can only see the existence of the universe as necessary. I think my students at least get a hint that there is something to this “proof.” I also bring out an article that shows how empirical science really only developed in the Christian West because of our understanding of God as creator of a good universe; and that the wisdom of God shown as revealed to us gives things a dependable stability.
